Tree work in Dracut
Tree jobs we refer in Dracut

Tree Removal
Dead, dying, leaning or simply unwanted trees, including the tight ones that have to come down in sections over a roof.

Pruning & Trimming
Deadwood out, limbs lifted off the roof and the service wire, and crowns thinned so the tree stands up to wind and snow.

Stump Grinding
Grinding the stump below grade so the spot can be seeded, planted or paved, with the chips hauled off or left as mulch.

Storm Damage & Emergency Work
Trees and big limbs on the house, the car or the driveway after wind, ice or a nor'easter, once the utility has made any wires safe.
Not sure which job it is?
(978) 698-4783If the tree is anywhere near a brook or pond, say so when you call; in Dracut that can bring in the Conservation Agent.
Rules and permits
Who decides about trees in Dracut
In Dracut, trees on town property are handled by the DPW's Parks & Trees Division (Parks & Trees), and near water the Conservation Commission has a say, out to 200 feet from a year-round stream (Wetlands Permitting).

Street and town trees. Parks & Trees looks after trees on town streets, in parks and on conservation land, along with miles of roadside brush, with the aim of finding and reducing hazards to public and private property (Parks & Trees). The town bylaw on streets and sidewalks puts any necessary tree removal under the Tree Warden's supervision and says a street-opening permit doesn't allow anyone to remove or trim a tree (General Bylaws, Ch. 8A). State law adds that a tree in the public way or on its boundary may be cut only by the tree warden or with the warden's written permit, and that removing one takes a public hearing (M.G.L. c.87 §3). Report a town tree through the Report a Concern page; the town notes that a report isn't an insurance claim.
Scenic roads. Dracut's 2024 open space plan describes scenic views along Marsh Hill, Mammoth and Methuen roads but doesn't designate them as scenic roads (2024 OSRP), and we found no scenic road list on the town's site.
Wetlands and streams. The Conservation Commission enforces both the state Wetlands Protection Act and Dracut's own Wetland Bylaw and Regulations. Its review covers projects within 100 feet of wetlands, ponds and intermittent streams and within 200 feet of perennial streams. For cutting near a resource area, the town asks you to contact the Conservation Agent to confirm which permit applies, and says certain minor activities, such as removing a hazardous tree, may qualify for Administrative Approval by Conservation staff (Wetlands Permitting). The bylaw itself is on the Wetland Bylaw and Regulations page. If your lot backs onto town conservation land, know where the line is: the Agent and Commission are contacting abutters about suspected encroachments (Conservation), and trail work on that land requires a permit (Conservation Land Use Policy).
Wires and digging. The town sends tree issues near or on wires to National Grid at 1-800-322-3223 (Parks & Trees); National Grid holds the electric franchise in Dracut (DPU franchise list). Before excavating, state law calls for notice to Dig Safe at least 72 hours ahead, weekends and legal holidays excluded (M.G.L. c.82 §40A); your tree company can tell you whether its work needs one.
Last verified November 2026. New England Tree Service is a referral service. We don't cut trees, request hearings or file with the conservation commission.
Brush and forest
Brush, burning and Dracut's state forest
Compost site. The DPW Dillon Center at 833 Hildreth Street composts leaves, brush and grass clippings. It is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 10:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; call 978-957-0411 to confirm it's open, since gate staffing, weather and holidays can close it (Yard Waste Information). The town's pages don't list curbside yard waste pickup or say what to do with stumps.
Burning. Dracut isn't among the places that ban open burning. State rules allow brush and forestry debris to be burned from January 15 to May 1, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., at least 75 feet from dwellings, with a fire department permit; stumps, leaves and grass are off limits (open burning rules). The Dracut Fire Department takes permit applications online through ViewPoint (Permits); ask it about an open burning permit before the season; headquarters is at 488 Pleasant Street (Fire Department).
Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsboro State Forest. This state forest covers more than 1,000 acres across three towns, with ponds, swamps and wetlands (DCR). About 527 acres of it are in Dracut, and open space covers about 26% of the town; the largest town-owned protected parcel is the 54-acre Rifle Range Conservation Area. The plan lists multiflora rose, European buckthorn and Oriental bittersweet among the invasive plants in town (2024 OSRP).
FAQ
Dracut tree questions
Does Dracut take care of trees along my street?
The town maintains and removes trees on town property through the DPW's Parks and Trees Division. Tree problems can be reported through the town's AccessE11 portal under "Tree issues," and the town sends anything on or near wires to National Grid at 1-800-322-3223. If a wire is down, stay at least 30 feet away and call 911 or National Grid's outage line, 1-800-465-1212.
Can a hazardous tree near a wetland come down without a full filing?
Possibly. Dracut's Conservation staff say some minor activities, removing a hazardous tree among them, may qualify for Administrative Approval. Contact the Conservation Agent before the work to confirm which permit applies.
How close to a stream does the Conservation Commission get involved?
Within 200 feet of a perennial, year-round stream, and within 100 feet of wetlands, ponds and intermittent streams.
Where can brush from a tree job go in Dracut?
The compost site at the DPW Dillon Center, 833 Hildreth Street, takes leaves, brush and grass clippings on weekdays. Call 978-957-0411 first to make sure the gate is open.
What does it cost me to use New England Tree Service?
Nothing. The request and the referral are free; the tree company prices the work.
